Section 80C Investments: Which Saves Most Tax?

Every eligible ₹1 under Section 80C has the same effect on taxable income, up to the combined ₹1.5 lakh cap. The investment choice changes liquidity and returns, not the deduction per rupee.

₹15 lakh calculator scenario

₹46,800 saved with ₹1.5 lakh under 80C

Old-regime tax falls from ₹2,57,400 to ₹2,10,600. Ordinary 80C gives no deduction under the new regime.

Compare the lock-ins before the tax saving

Use mandatory EPF and eligible home-loan principal first because they may already consume much of the cap. Fill only the remaining gap with an investment that matches your goal.

PPF15 yearsDeclared interestYes

Why "most tax" is the wrong ranking

The calculator puts old-regime tax at ₹2,57,400 without 80C and ₹2,10,600 with the full deduction. A ₹50,000 eligible contribution has the same tax effect whether it goes to PPF or ELSS.

Compare expected return, volatility, access to money and product charges after confirming eligibility. The calculator caps 80C at ₹1.5 lakh, so entering ₹2 lakh does not produce another deduction.

Check the official rules

Tax rules depend on the financial year and the facts of your return. Verify the current provisions on the Income Tax Department portal before filing.
